Our Process
New referrals
Once you have written/ emailed your child’s education setting informing them of your intention to home educate your child/ren and the date from which the home education will start, they will provide you with a 10 day cooling off period (LB Barnet schools only) during which time you can return your child to the school roll. The school will off roll your child and send EHE at BELS an Off rolling form along with your deregistration letter/ email to us at BELS. At this point, your child will be registered with us as electively home educated.
We will then write out to you asking for information on the home education that you are providing for your child. This information can be provided via a meeting with us in person or online or in writing. We will then make a decision as to whether the education that you are providing your child is suitable. Where your provision is found to be suitable, we will send you a thank you email. Where a provision is found to be unsuitable or we do not receive sufficient information on a child’s home education provision despite requests, we will refer to our Child Missing Education (CME) Officer, who will make contact with you.
Reviews are subsequently held annually unless we are advised of any concerns regarding the home education provision, in which case we will contact you to discuss reviewing your child’s home education again.
There is no legal requirement to either meet with us or provide written information. However, where we do not receive information on a child’s home education provision, we are required to make a referral to our Child Missing Education (CME) Officer.
Existing home educators
We will write to you annually asking for you to update us on your child’s elective home education provision. The only exception to this will be if we are advised of any concerns regarding the home education provision, in which case we will contact you to discuss reviewing your child’s home education again. Where a provision is found to be unsuitable or we do not receive sufficient information on a child’s home education provision despite requests, we will refer to our Child Missing Education (CME) Officer, who will make contact with you.
